Dolores Cannon once said she didn’t choose this work — it chose her. Perhaps the same is true for every soul drawn to these questions.
Dolores Cannon (1931–2014) was an American hypnotherapist who spent over four decades developing a regression technique that has become one of the most widely practiced approaches to past life work worldwide. Her method — Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique, or QHHT — emphasizes deep hypnotic states and direct communication with what Cannon called the “Subconscious” or “Higher Self.” Today, thousands of practitioners across the globe are trained in her method.
Who Was Dolores Cannon?
Dolores Cannon began her career as a conventional hypnotherapist in the 1960s alongside her husband Johnny Cannon, who worked as a hypnotist in the U.S. Navy. In the early 1970s, a session with a client led Dolores unexpectedly into unfamiliar territory: the client began describing apparent past life memories in vivid, detailed narrative. This experience redirected the course of her career entirely.
Over the following decades, Cannon developed and refined what became QHHT, conducted thousands of sessions, and wrote nineteen books documenting her findings. Her titles include the three-volume Convoluted Universe series, The Three Waves of Volunteers and the New Earth, and Jesus and the Essenes. Cannon’s books blend session transcripts with her interpretations and have sold millions of copies worldwide.
She founded the Quantum Healing Hypnosis Academy (QHHA) to train practitioners, and before her death in 2014 she had certified practitioners across dozens of countries. That number has grown considerably since.
What Is QHHT?
QHHT sessions are designed to access the deepest level of the hypnotic state — what Cannon called the Somnambulistic level — at which she believed genuine past life memories and direct communication with the Higher Self become possible.
Key elements of a QHHT session include:
Somnambulistic state: Unlike lighter hypnotic states used in standard regression work, QHHT aims for the deepest level of trance accessible to most people. Cannon believed this level, naturally entered during the moments just before sleep and upon waking, allows access to a deeper layer of memory and consciousness.
Past life exploration: Sessions typically include one or more past life visualizations, guided by the practitioner with open, non-leading questions. Clients explore scenes, relationships, and the end of the life, often arriving at insights about the themes being worked through across lifetimes.
The Higher Self dialogue: The most distinctive element of QHHT is what Cannon called “calling in the Subconscious” — an aspect of the self she described as possessing greater wisdom and perspective than the conscious mind. Practitioners ask the Higher Self questions on behalf of the client, often including questions about health, life purpose, and relationships.
Body scans: At the invitation of the Higher Self, QHHT practitioners conduct what Cannon termed a “body scan” — asking the Higher Self to identify and address physical or emotional areas of concern. These are not medical procedures and no medical claims are made, but clients often report significant shifts following this part of the session.
What Do Clients Experience?
Client experiences in QHHT sessions vary widely. Some enter deep trance states and report vivid, cinematic past lives. Others remain in lighter states and describe more impressionistic experiences — feelings, colors, and knowing rather than visual narrative. Both types of experience are considered valid within the QHHT framework.
Many clients report that the Higher Self dialogue is the most meaningful part of the session, describing it as contact with a profoundly wise and loving aspect of themselves. Common themes include receiving clarity about life purpose, gaining perspective on difficult relationships, and processing chronic physical symptoms or longstanding fears.
Sessions are typically three to five hours long — significantly longer than standard regression sessions — to allow adequate time for induction, past life exploration, and the Higher Self dialogue.
QHHT vs. Other Regression Methods
QHHT is distinguished from standard past life regression primarily by its emphasis on the somnambulistic state and the direct Higher Self communication. Other regression approaches — including those developed by Brian Weiss and Michael Newton — use lighter trance states and different frameworks for understanding what the client is accessing. QHHT practitioners tend to interpret past life content and Higher Self messages more literally.
Finding a QHHT Practitioner
Certified QHHT practitioners have completed Dolores Cannon’s official training program through the Quantum Healing Hypnosis Academy. When choosing a practitioner, Level 2 or above certification indicates more extensive training and supervised practice experience.
